Why Waterfowl Is Different

Feather detail is everything.

A waterfowl mount stands or falls on the condition of the feathers and the accuracy of the pose. That's where experience dating back to 1978 shows up — in the details most hunters never consciously notice, but instantly feel.

Who does the work: Waterfowl is mounted in our Jefferson studio under Aaron and Austin Stehling, the second generation of the family studio that has been in Jefferson since 1978. We mount North American ducks, geese and sea ducks (we are not currently accepting swan or crane mounts), and the studio is a USDA-approved facility (W10015) for eligible bird imports.

Experience behind every mount: Aaron and Austin Stehling bring decades of bird-taxidermy experience to their work. They also share their techniques through Taxidermy Insider and The Taxidermy Twins. Learn more about our experience and approach.

01

Feather Integrity

Proper handling starts the moment the bird hits the water. We wash, degrease and dry every bird so the natural sheen and color of the feathers stay true.

02

Anatomical Accuracy

Wing position, neck angle, foot placement — every pose choice has to match real waterfowl behavior. Our mounts look caught mid-moment, never frozen or posed.

03

Habitat-Grade Scenery

Cattails, water surfaces, driftwood, cornstalks — we build real habitat around the bird in our Jefferson studio so the mount belongs in its environment.

Pose Options & Galleries

Eight ways to mount the bird.

Pick the look first; a duck costs the same in any pose. Each card opens a gallery of client birds we’ve mounted.

Which pose fits your space?

A duck costs the same in any pose, so choose by where the bird will go.

A wall, with no shelf or floor space
Flying duck or flying goose, hung flush on the wall or from the ceiling. Flying ducks include a wall bracket. Flying-pose suitability depends on the bird's condition; we'll assess it and discuss the options with you.
A shelf, mantel, desk or table
Standing duck or standing goose on its own base. Plan shelf, table or mantel space for a standing goose rather than wall space.
A cabin or office wall, or beside a shotgun
Dead mount duck on a small wall panel or leather strap, or dead mount geese on a backer sized to the wingspan. A strap of three to five birds suits a lodge or a large wall.
A bird with shot damage
Whether a bird can be mounted, and which poses are suitable, depends on its condition. Contact us before shipping or bring it in so we can assess it and discuss the options.
A pair, a flock or a full scene
Multi-bird wall panels, ceiling spreads and sculpted-water scenes are planned around your space and quoted separately.

Bases, habitat, panels and multi-bird displays are priced separately from the bird (see what’s included). Not sure? Describe the space when you start your mount, and we’ll help you choose the pose.

Before You Drop Off or Ship

What to do with your bird right now

Good feathers start in the blind. If you can’t bring the bird in the same day, freeze it whole.

  1. Don’t gut or skin it. Leave the bird whole.
  2. Carry it by the feet, not the neck, and keep it out of the pile in the boat.
  3. Wipe off blood and put a small wad of paper towel in the bill.
  4. Smooth the feathers. Tuck the bird’s head under its wing, place it in one or two Ziploc bags or garbage bags, and freeze it.
  5. Label the bag with your name, the species and the date.

Importing ducks and geese from abroad?

Argentina duck and dove hunts, Mexico migratory waterfowl, and other international waterfowl trophies require a USDA-approved facility on the receiving end. Without one, customs has no choice but to hold or destroy the birds.

Our W10015 designation lets us legally receive, quarantine, and clear your waterfowl — then move them straight into the studio for mounting. Talk to us before your hunt so the paperwork is right the first time.
