The canvasback is the king of the divers: a long sloping profile, a deep red head and eye, a black chest, and a back so pale it looks white on the water. A drake canvasback mount has presence, and because cans are big for a duck, the mount holds its own next to a goose. Stehling’s Taxidermy has mounted canvasbacks and redheads since 1978, in-house at our Jefferson, Wisconsin studio, and they are among our favorite birds to build. Any canvasback pose is $575.

Canvasback Mount Poses
Swimming Canvasback
Cans sit low and heavy on big water. A drake on a sculpted water base, head up and alert, is the pose that looks most like the bird you saw from the layout boat.
Flying Canvasback
A can in flight shows the wedge head and the pale back against the black chest. Pairs and small flocks on a wall are a specialty; see flying duck mounts.
Standing Canvasback
Standing on a rock or a piece of driftwood for a shelf or mantel. See standing duck mounts.
Canvasback and Redhead Pairs
A drake canvasback with a drake redhead side by side shows the difference in head shape that every diver hunter argues about. A great two-bird scene.
Canvasback Mount Pricing

Field Care for a Canvasback Mount
- Pick it up by the feet. Do not carry a can by the neck; the long head profile is the whole mount.
- Wipe blood immediately and plug the bill.
- Keep it out of the pile and off the bottom of the boat. Divers get wet and matted fast.
- Don’t gut it. Tuck the bird’s head under its wing, place it in one or two Ziploc bags or garbage bags, and freeze it.
- Late birds are best. A December can from big water has the fullest color and the cleanest back.
