Mallard Duck Mounts: Poses, Pricing and What to Expect
The mallard is the duck everyone mounts first, and for good reason. A drake greenhead has the iridescent head, the white neck ring, the chestnut chest, and the curl feathers that make a duck mount look like a duck mount. Stehling’s Taxidermy has mounted mallards since 1978, and every one is mounted in our Jefferson, Wisconsin studio under Aaron and Austin Stehling. Any mallard mount, any pose, is $575.
Flying Mallard Mount
Landing with the wings cupped and feet down, or climbing out of the decoys. A flying mallard mount hangs on a wall bracket and shows the full wing and blue speculum. See flying duck mounts.
Standing and Preening Mallard
A relaxed drake on driftwood, or a drake and hen pair on a log, is the most natural look and the easiest to put on a shelf or mantel. See standing duck mounts.
Swimming Mallard on a Water Base
A drake or pair swimming on a clear sculpted water base with cattails is a showpiece for a desk or a mantel. Water scenes are quoted with the mount.
Mallard Dead Mount
A traditional hanging mallard, feet up and wings relaxed, next to an old double gun. Classic sporting-art look. See dead mount ducks.
Black Duck Mounts
The mallard’s darker cousin. Black duck mounts show the contrast between the dark body and the pale head and the purple speculum, and a black duck mounted with a drake mallard makes a handsome pair. Same price, same poses.
Pairs, Trios and Flocks
Drake and hen mallards together, three ducks mounted landing into one wall scene, or a mixed flock of mallards, black ducks, and pintails. Multi-bird scenes are quoted per project; send us a photo of the wall.
Mallard Mount Pricing
$575 for any mallard or black duck in any pose. A simple driftwood base is $65 extra or a standard habitat scene $150 extra (one or the other); water scenes and custom displays are quoted. Pay in full, 50/50 (half at order, half due in eight months), three installments, or monthly through our Easy 8 Payment Plan. Standard delivery is 12 to 14 months; rush service at 180, 90, or 30 days on select orders. See the full price list.
Getting Your Mallard Ready for the Taxidermist
- Pick a full-plumage drake. Early-season greenheads are often still in eclipse; late October through December birds look best.
- Carry it by the feet, not the neck. Keep it out of the pile in the boat.
- Wipe blood immediately and put a paper towel in the bill.
- Don’t gut it. Tuck the bird’s head under its wing, place it in one or two Ziploc bags or garbage bags, and freeze it. Label the bag.
Then drop it off or call us about shipping. See the waterfowl field-care steps and shipping instructions.
