The craft

What makes a great flying duck mount

A flying duck should read like a single frozen frame from real flight — wings in a natural power stroke, feet tucked, head position matching the flight phase, and feather groups flowing with the wind. Our flying duck mounts include standard flying styles, banking poses, landing-in poses, and specialty multi-bird flocks.

Every bird goes through meticulous skinning, fleshing, and washing before it ever touches a form. We test-fit each bird on multiple forms to find the posture that matches its size, wingspan, and plumage. Habitat bases, driftwood mounts, and wall-flush installations are all available.

What to expect

Built the right way, every time

Every mount we deliver goes through the same meticulous process — no shortcuts, regardless of pose or species.

Pose accuracy

Wing position, head tilt, and feet match what the bird actually does mid-flight — not a generic flying form.

Feather integrity

Secondary and primary flight feathers re-aligned by hand after drying so light catches correctly.

Mount options

Wall-flush, ceiling-hung, driftwood, or full habitat — we’ll recommend what fits your space. See which pose fits your space.

Field care

Get the most out of your bird

The 30 seconds after the bird hits the ground matter more than anything we do in the studio. Follow these basics to protect your mount:

  • Do NOT gut the bird — leave it fully intact
  • Smooth feathers in natural direction before freezing
  • Tuck the bird’s head under its wing, place it in one or two Ziploc bags or garbage bags, and freeze it
  • Label the bag with the species and date

Flying Duck Mounts by Species

A flying duck mount is the pose that captures the moment you remember: wings cupped, feet down, coming into the decoys. It mounts on a wall bracket, takes up no floor space, and shows the full wing and speculum color. Most species below are $575 in any flying pose at Stehling’s Taxidermy, mounted in our Jefferson, Wisconsin studio under Aaron and Austin Stehling.

Mallard Duck Mounts

The greenhead is many hunters’ first duck mount. A landing drake with the wings cupped and the curl feathers showing is a classic flying pose. See our mallard mounts page.

Pintail Mount

A sprig is built for a flying pose: long neck, long tail, and a slim body that looks fast even on the wall. A drake pintail landing is one of the most elegant duck mounts we make.

Canvasback Duck Mounts

The king of the divers. A canvasback in flight shows the wedge head, red eye, and clean white back. Cans, redheads, bluebills, and other divers are all $575.

Wood Duck, Teal, and Wigeon

Small puddle ducks make great flying pairs and small flocks. See our wood duck mounts page and our puddle duck mounts page for teal, wigeon, gadwall, and shoveler.

Bufflehead, Goldeneye, and Sea Ducks

A drake bufflehead or goldeneye in flight is a small, striking piece. Eiders and scoters are $675; see eider and sea duck mounts.

Flying Duck Mount Pricing

Most duck mounts are $575 per bird in any flying pose; eiders and scoters are $675 per bird. Wall brackets are included. A simple driftwood base is $65 extra or a standard habitat scene $150 extra (one or the other); multi-bird flock scenes and custom displays are quoted. Pay in full, 50/50 (half at order, half due in eight months), three installments, or monthly through our Easy 8 Payment Plan. Standard delivery is 12 to 14 months. See the full price list.

Flying Duck Mount FAQ

How much does a flying duck mount cost?

Most ducks are $575 per bird in any flying pose at Stehling’s Taxidermy; eiders and scoters are $675 per bird.

Which ducks look best flying?

Pintails, mallards, canvasbacks, and wood ducks all show well in flight. Any duck with an undamaged wing can be mounted flying. Whether a bird can be mounted, and which poses are suitable, depends on its condition. Contact us before shipping or bring it in so we can assess it and discuss the options.

Is this page about mounting my own duck?

Yes. We mount ducks that hunters bring to our Jefferson studio or New Franken showroom, or ship to us frozen. Here is how to keep your bird until then.

Can you mount a pair or a flock flying together?

Yes. Pairs and flocks of three or more on a single wall panel or ceiling mount are a specialty; send us a photo of the wall.
