Pheasant Mount Poses & Ideas
Pheasants give a taxidermist a lot to work with: a long tail, iridescent green head, white neck ring, and a copper-and-gold body that catches light from every angle. The pose you choose decides how much of that shows. These are the pheasant mount ideas we build most often.
Flying Pheasant Mount
The classic. A flying pheasant mount captures the flush, wings open, tail streaming, and works beautifully on a wall bracket or above a doorway. It is the best pose for showing off wing color and tail length, and it takes up very little floor space.
Flushing / Rising Pheasant
Wings up, feet just leaving the ground, usually set on a habitat base with grass or corn stubble. This is the pose that tells the story of the shot and pairs well with a dog on a mantel scene.
Standing Pheasant Mount
A standing pheasant mount, relaxed or alert, is the most natural-looking option and the easiest to display on a shelf, desk, or pedestal. We can add a habitat base with snow, corn, or prairie grass to match where you hunted.
Strutting / Crowing Rooster
Head back, ear tufts up, tail fanned slightly. A crowing rooster shows the full head color and is a favorite for hunters who want something different from the standard flying bird.
Pairs and Coveys
A rooster and hen together, or two roosters fighting, makes a striking multi-bird scene. Pheasant hens are legal to mount in most states when taken on licensed preserves; ask us if you are unsure about your bird.

Field Care for a Pheasant Mount
A great pheasant mount starts the moment the bird hits the ground. A few simple steps protect the feathers until the bird reaches us:
- Do not wring the neck or carry the bird by the neck. Pick it up by the feet.
- Keep the feathers clean and dry. Wipe away blood with a damp paper towel and tuck a small wad of paper towel in the mouth to stop drips.
- Don’t gut the bird. Leave it whole.
- Cool it quickly. Slide the bird head-first into a plastic bag or a nylon stocking to keep the feathers smooth, squeeze out the air, and freeze it. A frozen pheasant keeps for months.
- Choose the best bird. Late-season roosters with long tails and full color make the best mounts. Avoid birds with heavy shot damage to the head or wings if you have a choice.

Standard turnaround is 12 to 14 months. Rush service is available at 180, 90, or 30 days for an additional fee.
Can you mount a pheasant that has been frozen for a long time?
Usually, yes. A bird bagged properly and kept frozen will mount well even after a year or more. Freezer burn on the head or feet can sometimes be repaired.
What is the best pose for a pheasant mount?
Flying is the most popular because it shows the most color and fits on a wall. Standing mounts are the most natural and the easiest to place on a shelf. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the spot where it will hang and we will recommend a pose.
