The short answer: a whitetail shoulder mount is $1,100 at Stehling’s Taxidermy, a pedestal mount is $1,350, a European skull mount is $275, and a full life-size mount is $3,200. Those are flat prices, not “starting at” numbers, and they cover any pose, head turn, or ear set. Below is what each option includes, what adds to the price, how payment works, and what to expect from cheaper quotes.

What Adds to the Cost of a Deer Mount
- Pedestal and habitat. The $250 pedestal upgrade covers the sculpted neck and chest. The base or wall panel is quoted separately, and a rub tree, scrape scene, cornfield, or snow base is quoted on top of that, usually a few hundred dollars depending on the size of the scene. See deer pedestal mount ideas.
- Rush service. Standard delivery is 12 to 14 months. Rush service is available at 180 days (+25%), 90 days (+50%), or 30 days (+100%) on select orders, so a $1,100 shoulder mount back in six months is $1,375.
- Cape damage and replacement capes. A cape cut too short, slipped from sitting warm, or shot up through the neck may need a replacement cape, which is quoted separately. Good field care is the cheapest insurance; see how to skin a deer for a shoulder mount.
- Antler repair and reproductions. Broken tines and sheds mounted to a skull cap are quoted per job.
- Shipping. If you ship the cape to us and want the finished mount shipped back, crating and freight are billed at cost. Most out-of-state customers pick up on the way through or drive over. See shipping to us.
What Does Not Add to the Cost
Pose, head turn, ear position, and expression are all included in the $1,100. So is free caping at either location during open hours if you bring the whole deer or the head and cape. A wall pedestal costs the same as a floor pedestal. Doe and buck shoulder mounts are the same price.
How Payment Works
Our Easy 8 Payment Plan gives you four ways to pay over eight months: pay in full when you place the order, 50/50 (half at order, half due in eight months), three installments, or eight equal monthly payments. No banks, no interest, and no credit check.
Why Deer Mount Prices Vary So Much
You will see a wide range of quotes for a whitetail shoulder mount. The difference is almost always in three places: the tanning (a commercially tanned cape lasts decades; a dry-preserved one can crack and shed in a few years), the form and eyes (a species-specific form with the right ear butts and a quality glass eye versus a generic form), and the finish work around the eyes, nose, and ear liners, which is what makes a mount look alive from across the room. Stehling’s has been building whitetail mounts in Jefferson, Wisconsin since 1978, with two generations of the family leading the work. If a quote is far below $1,000, ask which of those three things is being cut.
