A big northern pike is long, mean, and built for the wall, and a 40-inch fish from the Wisconsin River, Green Bay, or a Canadian trip makes one of the most dramatic fish mounts there is. Stehling’s Taxidermy has been mounting northern pike in Jefferson, Wisconsin since 1978, as skin mounts and hand-painted replicas, and we ship finished fish anywhere in the country.

Pike Skin Mounts ($30 per inch)
Your actual fish, skinned, preserved, and mounted on a carved form, then repainted to the photos you took at the boat. A pike skin mount is detailed work: the long dorsal and anal fins sit far back on the body and have to be rebuilt without shrinking, and the head has to be sculpted so the fish looks alive rather than flat. That fin work is where a studio that has mounted fish for more than four decades earns its keep. Freeze the fish flat and whole (see below) and it will come back looking like the day you caught it.
Pike Replica Mounts ($35 per inch)
A fiberglass reproduction cast from a pike of the same length and girth, hand-painted to your fish. Replicas are the choice for a released fish, a pike that was filleted before anyone thought about mounting it, or a winter fish from a tip-up that froze in a bad shape. They never fade, shrink, or crack, and we match your fish’s bean-shaped spots and fin color rather than spraying a generic pattern.

Pike Mount Poses
- Wall mount, S-curve. A long, slow curve on a driftwood or walnut plaque. Plan on three to four feet of wall for a 40-inch fish.
- Strike pose. Mouth open, body bent, chasing a perch or a sucker. A dramatic pose on a wall or a floor base.
- Weed-bed scene. The pike suspended over cabbage or reeds on a water base, the way it sits in the shallows in May.
- Ice scene. A pike under a cut-out ice hole with a tip-up flag up, a favorite for winter fish.
- Pike and musky pair. A northern and a musky on one base to show the difference in markings.
Field Care for a Pike Mount
- Do not gut, bleed, or fillet it. Leave the fish whole.
- Photograph both sides wet, right away. The spots and green fade fast; the photos are what we paint from.
- Watch the teeth and the fins. Handle the fish by the back, not the gill plate, and keep the tail and dorsal fin from folding or tearing.
- Wrap in a wet towel, bag it, and freeze it flat. Fold the fins against the body, squeeze the air out, and clear a full shelf. A pike frozen bent stays bent.
- Releasing it? Measure length and girth, take the photos, and let it go. We build the replica from that.

Northern Pike Mount FAQ
How much does it cost to mount a northern pike?
$30 per inch for a skin mount and $35 per inch for a replica at Stehling’s Taxidermy. A 40-inch pike is $1,200 as a skin mount or $1,400 as a replica. Bases are extra.
Can you mount a pike that was caught through the ice?
Yes. Get it out of the wind, keep the fins from freezing in a folded position, wrap it wet, and freeze it flat as soon as you get home. If it froze bent on the ice, a replica is the better choice.
How big should a pike be to mount?
There is no minimum. Most pike we mount are 36 inches and up, but a first pike or a personal best is worth mounting at any size.
How long does a pike mount take?
Standard delivery is 12 to 14 months, with rush service available at 180, 90, or 30 days.
