Mandarin Duck Mounts
The mandarin drake is, by most accounts, the most ornately coloured duck on earth: orange sail feathers standing off the back, a purple breast with white bars, a red bill, and a copper-and-cream face. Mandarins are not a North American game bird, so the ones that reach our bench come from private aviaries, breeders, and waterfowl collections. When one dies, the owner almost always wants it preserved, and that is work we are glad to do.
Mandarin Duck Mount Poses
Perched on a branch is the pose that suits the species best, because mandarins are cavity nesters that perch like wood ducks. Standing on driftwood, swimming on a clear water base, and a drake-and-hen pair are all popular. The sail feathers are the signature detail, so we set them individually rather than letting them lie flat.
Working From an Aviary Bird
Aviary and collection birds usually reach us in better condition than a hunted bird because there is no shot damage, but they often come to us after sitting in a freezer for a while. That is fine. Tuck the bird’s head under its wing, place it in one or two Ziploc bags or garbage bags, and freeze it. Then call us. We will tell you honestly whether the plumage is worth mounting before you ship it.
