Mounting a Black Bear: Which Pose Is Right for Your Bear?
Mounting a black bear is a bigger decision than mounting a deer. The animal is heavier, the hide is thicker, and the pose you choose decides how much room the mount takes and how much it costs. Here is how we walk hunters through it at Stehling’s Taxidermy, where we have been mounting black bears since 1978.
Black Bear Half Mount (from $2,500)
The pose this page is about, and the one we recommend most. A half mount includes the head, shoulders, and front legs, mounted on a habitat base so the bear appears to be climbing over a log, coming out of a den, or reaching up a tree. It gives most of the presence of a life-size mount in a fraction of the floor space. Habitat is included in the starting price; larger scenes are quoted.
Black Bear Shoulder Mount ($1,100)
Head and shoulders on the wall, mouth open or closed, head turned left, right, or straight. The most affordable way to mount a bear and the best fit for a wall with limited space.
Life-Size Black Bear Mount ($5,000)
A full-body bear standing, walking, sitting, or on all fours on a custom base. The choice for a big boar, a color-phase bear, or a trophy room with the room to show it.
Black Bear Rug ($350 per foot)
A traditional open-mouth or closed-mouth rug, flat or wall-hung. See our bear rug page.
Bear Skull European Mount ($275)
Cleaned and whitened. A popular add-on next to a rug. See bear skull mounts.
Field Care Before Mounting a Black Bear
- Decide on the pose first. A half mount needs the front legs skinned to the pad with the claws left in; a rug or life-size needs the whole hide including all four feet.
- Skin quickly and cool the hide. Bear fat holds heat and bear hides slip faster than deer. Get the hide off, get it cold, and get it frozen within a day, or salt it heavily if you cannot freeze.
- Leave the head and feet in if you are not experienced. We will turn the ears, lips, and feet. Just keep it cold.
- Freeze flat, hair out, in a heavy bag, then ship 2-day early in the week or bring it to Jefferson or New Franken. Full instructions on our shipping page, and more in our bear hunting and field care guide.
