Why Stehling's

A whitetail mount is a once-in-a-lifetime decision. We treat it that way.

The whitetail is the mount most hunters judge a studio by — the cape, the eyes, the expression. Every mount we build honors the hunt with correct reference, hand-sculpted anatomy, and materials chosen to last generations.

Your whitetail mount should reflect the buck you brought in and fit the space where you’ll display it. Explore shoulder, pedestal, pack and lifesize options, compare current prices, and talk with our team about a pose and presentation that suit your deer and your room.

Shoulder, Pedestal or Pack

Choose how your buck will hang.

A shoulder mount hangs flat on the wall. A pedestal mount has the neck and chest sculpted all the way around so it can be seen from the side. Here is what each option looks like and costs.

Field Care & Preparation

Get your buck to us in top condition.

A damaged cape is hard to fix at the bench, so protect the hide from the moment you tag out. Follow these essentials — then read the full guides.

The Four Essentials

  1. Cape it high. Never cut the throat or brisket. Cape well behind the shoulders so we have enough hide for a shoulder mount.
  2. Keep it cool & dry. Get it out of the sun and field-dress promptly. Heat and moisture slip hair fast.
  3. Photograph the buck. Multiple angles of the head and face help us match expression and antler alignment.
  4. Freeze or drop off fast. Bag the caped hide and head and freeze it, or drop off same-day. Call us and we'll guide you.

Whitetail Deer Taxidermy FAQ

How much does a whitetail deer mount cost in Wisconsin?

A whitetail shoulder mount is $1,100 in any pose. A pedestal mount is $1,350: the shoulder mount plus a $250 pedestal upgrade that covers the sculpted neck and chest, with the base or wall panel quoted separately and habitat additional. Life-size is $3,200 and a European mount is $275. Pack and half life-size mounts are quoted per project.

What types of whitetail deer mounts do you offer?

We offer shoulder mounts, pedestal and pack mounts, full-body lifesize and half-lifesize mounts, and clean European skull mounts. Every mount is posed to order rather than from a catalog.

Where is Stehling's Taxidermy located?

Every mount is built at our studio at 913 North Parkway Street in Jefferson. You can also drop off and pick up at our New Franken showroom near Green Bay. Hunters from across Wisconsin bring us their whitetail trophies.

How long does a whitetail deer mount take?

Turnaround depends on the season, mount type, and current studio workload. See our pricing page for current delivery times, and we'll confirm an estimated timeline when you drop off your deer.

What whitetail deer mount poses and pedestal options do you offer?

We build whitetail mounts in every popular pose — upright, semi-sneak, and full-sneak shoulder mounts, plus floor and wall pedestal mounts for a 360° display, pack mounts, half-lifesize, full-body lifesize, and clean European skull mounts. A pedestal upgrade can be added to any shoulder mount, and every pose is sculpted to your buck's antler spread, cape, and the room where it'll hang. Bring us your reference photos and we'll help you choose the pose that fits your space.

What's the difference between a wall pedestal and a floor pedestal deer mount?

A wall pedestal mounts to the wall and projects the deer outward for a dramatic 360°-style look without taking up floor space, and it can be finished with a wall habitat — rockwork, branches, or a natural scene behind the mount. A floor pedestal is a freestanding base you can view from all sides, and we build it on a variety of bases including barn board, hardwood, and natural habitat scenes. You're also welcome to bring in your own base if you have a specific piece in mind, and we'll build the mount to fit it. Either way, the $250 pedestal upgrade covers the sculpted neck and chest; the base or wall panel is quoted separately, and habitat is additional.

What can go behind or around a pedestal deer mount?

We can dress a pedestal mount with a range of wraps and backdrops to match your space and style — hide wraps, leather, rockwork, natural habitat, driftwood, and more. These details frame the mount and tie it to the setting of your hunt. Bring us reference photos or ideas and we'll recommend a wrap and base combination that fits your room and budget. Wraps, bases and habitat are quoted separately.
