Why Stehling's

A bear mount is a once-in-a-lifetime decision. We treat it that way.

Bears test the limits of taxidermy — massive hides, dense fur, commanding anatomy. Every mount we build honors the hunt and the animal with correct reference, hand-sculpted anatomy, and materials chosen to last generations.

Field Care & Preparation

Get your bear to us in top condition.

Bears are a race against heat. The first six hours after harvest matter more than the next six months. Follow these essentials — then read the full guides.

The Four Essentials

  1. Cool it fast. Get the bear out of the sun, skinned or gutted quickly, and into a cooler or walk-in within hours.
  2. Don't drag it out. Dragging rubs hair off hide. Pack it out or carry it if at all possible.
  3. Photograph before skinning. Multiple angles of the head, feet, and claws help us with reference and anatomy.
  4. Call us same-day. We'll walk you through freezing, shipping, or drop-off based on where you are.

Bear Taxidermy FAQ

What types of bear mounts do you offer?

Stehling's Taxidermy offers black bear shoulder mounts, half-mounts, full life-size mounts, bear rugs, and skull/European mounts. We tailor each to your trophy and display space.

What we are known for: Black bear is one of three things Stehling's Taxidermy is known for, alongside whitetails and waterfowl. Every fall, bears from Wisconsin's northern zone, Canada, and the West come through our Jefferson studio as half mounts, life-size mounts on custom habitat, rugs, and shoulder mounts, built in our Jefferson studio under Aaron and Austin Stehling, on commercially tanned hides so the mount lasts for generations.

How much does a bear mount cost?

Bear mount pricing varies by mount type, from rugs to full life-size poses. Contact Stehling's Taxidermy for a free, itemized quote based on the mount you want.

Can you make a bear rug?

Yes. We produce high-quality bear rugs with felt backing and open or closed-mouth options, capturing the natural color phase of your bear.

Where is Stehling's Taxidermy located?

We have two Wisconsin locations: our flagship at 913 North Parkway Street in Jefferson, and a second location in New Franken in the Green Bay area.

Where to Bring Your Bear Mount

Stehling’s Taxidermy builds every bear mount in our Jefferson studio. Drop off at our Jefferson studio in south-central Wisconsin, or our New Franken (Green Bay area) showroom in the northeast. We proudly serve hunters across the state — see all the areas we serve.

Looking for a bear taxidermist near you?

Bear is one of the species Stehling’s is best known for, and we work on them out of two Wisconsin locations. Our Jefferson flagship at 913 North Parkway Street covers Jefferson, Dodge, Waukesha, Dane, Rock and Walworth counties — Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Whitewater, Johnson Creek, Madison and the Milwaukee suburbs. Our New Franken showroom at 3861 Algoma Road sits just east of Green Bay and covers Brown, Kewaunee, Door, Oconto and Outagamie counties.

We handle shoulder mounts, half mounts, life-size mounts, rugs and skull mounts. If your bear is a colour phase — cinnamon, chocolate or blonde — mention it when you drop it off; phase hides are less forgiving and worth flagging early.

both locations take walk-ins during business hours, no appointment needed, and out-of-state clients ship to us regularly — read the shipping instructions first. Not sure what your project will cost? Ask us for a free quote.
