From the Field to the Showroom: The Ultimate Turkey Field Care Guide
Congratulations on bagging your tom! The adrenaline is pumping, and you’re already picturing that full strut mount in your trophy room. But the work isn’t done yet. In fact, the quality of your final taxidermy mount is determined the moment you pull the trigger.
At Stehlings Taxidermy, we can fix a lot of things, but we can’t fix a bird that has been ruined by poor field care. Turkey feathers are incredibly fragile; once bent or broken, they often cannot be repaired. To ensure your trophy looks as majestic on the wall as it did in the field, follow these essential steps.
1. The Shot: Aim for the Head
Taxidermy starts before the bird is even on the ground.
- Head and Neck Only: Always aim for the head and neck.
- Avoid Body Shots: A body shot can shatter quills and destroy the beautiful iridescent feathers on the breast and back. Massive feather loss in the body area is very difficult to hide.
2. Immediate Recovery
Once the bird is down, treat it like fragile glass.
- Stop the Flop: If the bird is thrashing, get to it quickly and hold it down firmly (by the wings) to stop it from beating its feathers against the ground, rocks, or brush.
- Do Not Wring the Neck: Never wring the neck of a turkey intended for mounting. This damages the skin and feathers in the critical neck area.
- Clean the Blood: If there is excessive blood on the feathers, rinse it gently with cold water immediately. Wet feathers are fine; stained, dried blood is much harder to remove later.
3. Carrying the Bird (Crucial Step!)
This is where most mistakes happen.
- NEVER carry by the neck: The weight of the body will pull feathers out of the neck skin and damage the delicate wattles.
- Carry by the Legs: Carry the turkey by its legs, high enough so the wings/tail do not drag on the ground.
- Bag It: Ideally, if you have a turkey vest with a large game pouch, carefully place the bird inside, ensuring the tail feathers are not crunched.
4. Cooling the Bird
Heat is the enemy. Bacteria begins to break down skin and loosen feathers (slippage) immediately upon death.
- Keep it Cool: Get the bird out of the sun immediately.
- Do Not Gut: Please do not gut the bird yourself. Traditional field dressing cuts (up the belly) can ruin the skin for certain poses. Bring the bird to us whole. We will skin it out properly and return the meat to you upon request.
- If You Must Keep the Meat Immediately: If you are in a situation where you absolutely must remove the meat before getting to the shop, do not cut the breast skin. Instead, make an incision down the back (dorsal) to remove the breast meat, but be aware this limits your mounting options. We strongly recommend leaving the bird whole.
5. Transport and Storage
- Do Not Use Mesh Bags: Never put a trophy turkey in a mesh onion sack or net. The feathers will poke through and snap off.
- Smooth the Feathers: Before moving the bird, take a moment to smooth all the feathers back into their natural alignment.
- Tuck the Head: Tuck the head under one wing to protect the neck and head feathers.
- Plastic Bag: Once cooled, place the bird in a heavy-duty trash bag. Squeeze as much air out as possible before sealing.
6. Freezing
If you aren’t coming straight to Stehlings Taxidermy, you need to freeze the bird ASAP.
- Ensure the bird is cold (not warm from the field) before bagging.
- Tuck the head under the wing.
- Carefully fold the tail feathers so they are not bent.
- Double bag the bird in heavy trash bags, removing all air to prevent freezer burn.
- Don’t lay heavy items on top: Place the bird on a flat shelf in the freezer where nothing will be stacked on top of it.
7. International Hunters: USDA Import Facility
Planning a hunt abroad? Stehlings Taxidermy is a USDA-approved import facility.
If you are hunting internationally or need to import birds (such as Ocellated Turkeys or Gould’s Turkeys from Mexico), please contact us before your trip. We can guide you through the specific preparation, paperwork, and shipping requirements to ensure your trophies clear customs smoothly and arrive safely at our shop.
