Dead Mount Turkeys

At Stehling’s Taxidermy, the dead mount is one of our most unique and conversation-starting turkey displays. A dead mount captures the raw, unposed beauty of a freshly harvested bird — hanging naturally as if just brought in from the field, wings relaxed, head down, and every detail preserved exactly as nature intended. It’s a striking, unconventional mount that tells the story of the hunt itself.

Brothers Aaron and Austin Stehling have built numerous dead mount turkeys over their 50+ combined years in the trade. Every mount is custom — from the hanging angle and wing position to the base, rope or hook detail, and display setting. Dead mounts work beautifully hung on a wall, suspended from a beam, or displayed in a rustic cabin or lodge setting. We work with you directly to capture exactly the look and feel you’re after.

We ship nationwide — hunters from across the country trust us with their birds. Learn how to ship your turkey to us, or drop it off at our Jefferson, WI studio or Green Bay showroom.

What Makes a Great Dead Mount Turkey?

A great dead mount starts with how you handle your bird in the field. Proper care immediately after the harvest has a direct impact on feather condition and the overall quality of the finished piece. Read our turkey field care guide to make sure your bird arrives in the best condition possible.

Once your turkey is in our studio, we discuss the exact look you want. The dead mount is unlike any other turkey pose — instead of recreating a living posture, we preserve the bird in its natural, relaxed state as if it were freshly taken from the field. The key details are the hang angle, how the wings drape, the natural fall of the tail feathers, and the positioning of the head and beard. Many hunters choose to include a rope, game strap, or hook as part of the display for an authentic, rustic feel.

Every dead mount from Stehling’s is individually sculpted and hand-finished — no two are alike. Dead mounts are especially popular with hunters who want something different from the traditional strutting or flying poses, and they make a bold statement in any cabin, lodge, or trophy room.

Turnaround time for a standard dead mount turkey is approximately 12–14 months. If you need your mount sooner, we offer rush service options starting at 180 days (+25%), 90 days (+50%), or even a 30-day super rush for select orders.
