How we mount fox
A fox has almost no margin for error — a few millimetres of extra eye set or a thick ear and the animal looks like a small dog. We thin the ears, rebuild the eye and lip lines, and keep the narrow muzzle and long legs that make a fox look like a fox. Winter-primed red fox with a full brush are the showpiece; grey fox are mounted to show the salt-and-pepper coat and the black tail stripe.
Our standard fox poses are a walking or standing life-size on a driftwood or rock base, a resting or curled fox on a log base for a tabletop, and wall mounts on a rock ledge or driftwood limb. Fox pair well with a bobcat, pheasant or fawn in two-animal habitat scenes.
Caring for your fox in the field
- Keep the fox cool and out of the sun; do not skin it. Freeze it whole in a bag if we cannot get it within a day.
- Fox slip easily in warm weather. If it was taken above 50°F, get it frozen within hours.
- Note the color phase and any damage to the brush so we can plan the pose.
